Environmental
Dolphin Talk
by Megan, P6, Rashielea Primary School
On Friday 6th February, Area 6 was given a talk about dolphins and the
damage we are causing to the sea and its creatures. The talk was given
by an Erskine woman, who was an expert on dolphins.
We found out many interesting facts about the dolphins. Firstly, we found out many different dolphin species such as the bottlenose and the common dolphin and that they live in oceans and seas all over the world. Some even around our coast!
There
were many experiments we did to find out how dolphins did things in their
own way, such as feeding their babies. We did this by using two dolphin
toys and a water squirter filled with milk. Two members of area 6 were
asked to come up and be a mummy dolphin and a dolphin calf. If the calf
wanted food it had to rub its mother's underside. That makes the mother
realise that her calf wants to be fed. Because the dolphin has to stay
streamlined the mother squirts the milk to the calf. We did the same thing
with the dolphin toys and we used the squirt gun to squirt the small toy

The thing we liked the most was getting lots of information about dolphins and the damage we are doing to the oceans. We saw many pictures of dolphins and one was very sad to see. This picture was one of a dolphin that had a plastic bag covering its blowhole. If someone hadn't been there the dolphin wouldn't have survived. Many things are being done to help these amazing creatures but sadly lots of them are dying.
Another thing we did was pretending to kiss a dolphin. We did this by using a cricket bat. We pushed it hard on our lips. It felt very hard.
At the end of the talk we asked the expert some other questions about dolphins. Some of the answers were funny and some were very interesting. We enjoyed the talk very much and we were left with an activity sheet to do. We had a brilliant time.
